Spanish for teachers – How to talk about special education in Spanish

This is a Spanish for teachers course focusing on the Spanish vocabulary, grammar and phrases you need as you discuss special education concerns, questions, evaluations, eligibility, services, IEPs and more.

In this course, You will learn how to communicate effectively about these common topics:

  1. Key vocabulary focused on discussing special education
  2. How to talk about evaluation and eligibility for services in Spanish
  3. How to respond to parent / guardian questions about special education
  4. How to express in Spanish the 13 categories of disabilities the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has established in order for students to receive Special Education Services.
  5. Steps to determine if a child is eligible for receiving the special education services.
  6. Key vocabulary to talk about these 13 categories of disabilities.

This course focuses on learning real-life, relevant Spanish that is needed in order to converse with students, parents, guardians about the topic of special education. The emphasis of this course is to help educators communicate effectively in Spanish with students and parents/guardians who are not fluent in English.

This is a 6 week hybrid course that alternates between video lessons and live classes on Zoom.

The class schedule is as follows:

Lesson 1 – Opens Jan. 9

Zoom Class 1 – Jan. 16 @5pm PT, 6pm MT, 7pm CT, 8pm ET

  • General terms of special education
  • Steps to take to determine if a child needs special education: Evaluation and Eligibility
Lesson 2 – Opens Jan. 23

Zoom Class 2 – Jan. 30 @5pm PT, 6pm MT, 7pm CT, 8pm ET

We believe you have to APPLY what you’re learning! What good is all that head knowledge without opening your mouth, making mistakes and using the Spanish your are learning!!!

One week before the live class, you will receive an email with your lesson to study. You will have one week to study the grammar, vocabulary and phrases and then you will come to the live workshop on Zoom to practice what you’ve been learning!!!

 

In this course we provide you with quick and easy video lessons, downloadable lesson notes, templates, flashcards, quizzes and other activities for further study to acquire these Spanish skills and to test your knowledge.

 

Who is this class ideal for?

  • This Spanish course is for classroom teachers that need to quickly learn Spanish to communicate to their Spanish-speaking students, families, parents and guardians.
  • This Spanish course is geared toward the teacher that has a basic knowledge of present tense verb conjugations and needs to acquire more the vocabulary  in Spanish.
  • However, ALL Spanish levels can join this series as vocabulary, verbs and contexts will be targeted for specific classroom scenarios.

4 Pasos: In each lesson there are 4 steps to complete the lesson:

Paso 1: Download lesson notes and vocabulary lists

Paso 2: Watch the lesson and take notes using the lesson notes provided

Paso 3: ¡Practica! Practice the lesson objectives in a variety of practice activities

Paso 4: Application – Implement this Spanish, right now, today in your communication with friends AND in the live practice sessions!

 

What is the format of this class?

This is a hybrid online course: This course is 100% online and combines asynchronous learning (on your own time) with live classes at scheduled times of the week (over Zoom). Each course includes video lessons, vocabulary lists and practice, online posting boards for regular feedback from your instructor and conversational prompts for further practice.
