In just 10 weeks, this medical Spanish course helps you…

Connect better with Spanish-speaking patients

Speaking someone’s language (albeit imperfect) generates a personal connection that you can’t replicate through telephone interpreters, video interpreters or face to face interpreters.

Improve the quality of care your Spanish-speaking patients receive

Every study shows that patient outcomes improve when they receive care in their preferred language.

Feel better about your work with Spanish-speaking patients

Wouldn’t it be a great feeling to know that you’re taking calculated steps to do all that you can within your time constraints to make a bigger difference?

Alleviate Frustrations

It’s natural to get frustrated and have some anxieties when you are providing care in another language. Interpreter phones are clunky & communication feels less personal

Build more trust

“Confianza” is the Spanish word for trust, and it’s proven to positively impact patient adherence to treatment plans and therefore patient outcomes.

Broaden your impact

At Common Ground International, we’re all about impacting communities through language. Every moment you spend working on your Spanish has a ripple effect in your community!

Early registration is only open and seats are limited! Simply put, this medical Spanish course is going to improve your communication and allow you to better connect with your patients.

What is the time commitment for the recorded lessons and the weekly live classes?

  • You can expect to spend 2-3 hours per week working through the recorded content, memorizing vocabulary, and completing the lesson activities
  • The live classes last 1hr each. Most people choose to attend consistently either the 10am session or the 7pm session (mountain time)… but you’re able to switch between sessions as your schedule demands or attend both! If you can’t attend either session, we record them for you to catch later.

Spring ’24 MMS Course schedule:

  1. Foundations: Review and Practice Lesson opens immediately upon registration
  2. Lesson 1 opens Wednesday March 13th
  3. Lesson 1 live class is on Tuesday March 19th at 10am or 7pm Mountain time.
  4. Each week a new lesson opens on Tuesdays right after the evening live class.
  5. Each week we have live classes on Tuesdays at 10a and 7p Mountain time to practice the previous week’s lesson
  6. The final live class of the Spring ’24 MMS session is May 21st, 2024.

This medical Spanish course improves your “Functional Fluency” and patient outcomes.

This class has been wonderful for me. I’ve built a lot of confidence and been able to use Spanish with my patients. It has really laid down a groundwork where I can keep learning more with the confidence that it’s given me.

Kaitlin B.

PNP, North Carolina

I don’t think there is anything more frustrating than not being able to communicate with your patients, whether that’s altered mental status, altered level of consciousness, or a language barrier. I can’t control the first two, but I can do something about the language barrier. This course has been really great for me, I wholeheartedly recommend it for you!

John B.

RN, CCP-C

I have tried for years to learn Spanish on my own, with some success, but I really needed to take my language skills to the next level. A friend of mine recommended CGI, so I enrolled in MMS and I have learned a tremendous amount!

I’ve taken both the Beginning and Intermediate MMS courses. It’s been a wonderful experience. Rory & Leslie are very helpful… It’s a good way for you to be able to master enough language skills to comfortably communicate with your patients.

Mary Lou V.

Retired Athletic Trainer, Texas

I just finished MMS with Rory & Leslie… Rory and Leslie helped me understand where my bad habits in Spanish were and fixed them… I noticed that not only my Spanish was improving, but everyone’s Spanish in class was improving. That tells me that their system works!

I’ve been working on my Spanish for about 3 years now… It’s been hard to find a tutor who knows the medical vocabulary I need as a recovery room nurse… But they’re great at helping you translate medical terms and explain them in more simplified terms. The thing that I really enjoy about this course is that they give you a lot of time for practicing and applying the Spanish you’re learning.

It’s been a blast actually learning Spanish! … This course is really focused on making sure individuals understand the concepts and I really enjoy that.

Jacob M., ER Volunteer

This has been fun, interactive, and educational. It is streamlined to help you learn the most useful information to connect with your patients effectively. Highly recommend.

Arielle Krueger

Westminster, CO

Absolutely loved this course! It is a great way to practice Spanish in a classroom setting, but without the stress of it being a traditional class. With that in mind, it is on you to study the material each week and hold yourself accountable to get the most out of the lecture. If that is your style of learning/studying, then this is 100% the course for you!

Marissa Werchan

Norwich, CT

I have appreciated the varied format of lessons, quizzes, flashcards and interactive elements. I thought it was nice there was a certain amount of structure w/ deadlines, which did help me even though I got more and more behind as the class progressed. I liked the break out sessions during the live lessons where I got a chance to work through challenges w/ others. Also, you are really good at explaining concepts (like the lesson on past tense verbs with different meanings- so useful)

Carrieanne Eyre

MMS has been a comprehensive, practical medical Spanish course that provided opportunities to improve my medical spanish and has given me more confidence in speaking with my spanish-speaking patients.

Lydia Park

Flushing, NY

Common Ground International’s online Medical Spanish course is very comprehensive and probably the best anywhere for health professionals of all levels. Rory is an amazing teacher and is very responsive to feedback as he is constantly evaluating and changing program elements to meet students’ needs. I highly recommend this course!

Gail Spiegel

Denver, CO

I really enjoyed this course! My Spanish improved to the point where my patients were complimenting me! I am not fluent (or even close) but I can communicate the basics in Spanish, understand my patients better, and follow the conversation better when using an interpreter. The vocabulary lessons were great, as well as learning about online resources for future use. Rory is an engaging, patient teacher who is responsive and helpful, and feels more like a friend than an instructor—but who is a knowledgeable, talented educator. He really goes the extra mile to answer questions and make sure everyone is learning the best way they can.

Colette Russen

Brooklyn, NY

Excellent course! Very relevant to medical practical Spanish. Good learning styles with a mix of written and audio experiences. Practice sessions were very helpful and made me more comfortable. Rory was able to make sure to align levels live so you didn’t feel like you were talking beneath or above your level. Able to do my own, so if I had to skip a week, I could make it up or keep up in other ways. Would do this again.

Marian McDonald

Allenstown, PA

The course was well thought out, well run and extremely helpful. My progress in learning Spanish was significant and there was also content on understanding Hispanic/Latino culture that I found fascinating and enjoyable. As in most things, you get out of the course what you put into it. I used all the resources fully and it was very beneficial to me.

Cheryl Gilbert

Fayetteville, AR

I started with intermediate MMS and recently took Advanced MMS. The attitudes of Rory and Andrea are very positive and supportive. It became easier for me to speak spanish in class and not worry so much about being wrong. They are both spanish language experts and are available outside of class or have office hours. Rory’s videos and accompanying printable notes are excellent – very comprehensive and applicable. I especially appreciated his presentations of the subjunctive, para and por, imperfect and preterit and the comparison of tener and estar with symptoms. The live class is well-organized and we got an email before class giving an outline of what will be covered in class. Then after class, the live class video is available to watch as well as the updated outline is available to print. A big plus for these classes is that you can connect with other healthcare professionals from the class in order to practice. I am very lucky that I have had a motivated and interesting person to practice with. I highly recommend these classes. The information presented is comprehensive. Rory and Andrea are both so positive and I get to practice speaking spanish with two people from opposite sides of the U.S. who were in my medical spanish classes.

Mastering Medical Spanish really helped me take the next steps in connecting with my patients in their native language. It’s helped me feel more comfortable with understanding their needs and communicating with them as effectively as I can. Thank you!

Blaine Olsen

Connecting with my patients has been my goal since enrolling in MMS. This semester, I have been able to have actual conversations with patients and it’s because of MMS. Whatever your learning style, the CGI team has a method to help!

Shanna Moss

I found the MMS course just by searching online, and reading the reviews really solidified my decision to sign up. I have now taken the Beginner MMS twice (just repeated it in Winter 2021) and my vocabulary, speaking knowledge, and listening comprehension are all improved. I was a beginner at the very start of my journey and now would consider myself an intermediate learner. Rory and Leslie are SO encouraging, and I felt nothing but welcome during the entire course. The live sessions are interactive and fun and having a conversation partner is KEY! I did not pursue a partner the first time I took the course, so the second time around I made a promise to myself to find a partner. It helped me tremendously! If you are looking for an interactive and encouraging environment to learn medical Spanish, this is it.

Mastering Medical Spanish has helped me be a more effective doctor and to have a direct and warm relationship with my Spanish speaking patients.

Mark Morris

Tampa, FL

I took the MMS class in the fall of 2020 at the beginner level and returned in the spring of 2021 at the intermediate level. This class has helped me feel more confident in my listening comprehension of Spanish. But, most importantly, the weekly live sessions have greatly improved my skills and confidence with speaking Spanish. I am looking forward to taking the Advanced MMS class in the fall. Thank you to Rory and Leslie for helping me with my Spanish speaking journey.

Stephanie Scheid

I thought this was a wonderful CME course. Let’s face it…most CME courses are painful to sit through. I really loved this course and learned SO much Spanish in a non-threatening and really entertaining way. Most of the students were other health care providers, so we connected very easily with each other and helped each other out. Rory, Andrea and Stephanie were all excellent instructors. I have been stuck at a certain point in my Spanish journey, and this course helped me to move ahead to a place where I feel comfortable speaking the language. While I won’t pretend to be fluent (yet!) I know I can carry on a basic conversation, which has helped me to build a better rapport with my Spanish-speaking patients.

Suzanne Fontecchio

Erie, PA

This course is truly top notch and should be taken by every medical professional that has Spanish speaking patients. From live sessions, to weekly meetings with a partner, to the prerecorded courses, all the bases are covered as you speak, listen, read and write in Spanish throughout each lesson. Without a doubt my speaking and comprehension has improved significantly over the last few months. Thanks to CGI for such a fantastic course – this is exactly what I needed!

What level is this Medical Spanish course appropriate for?

All levels.

Beginning MMS is perfect for those learners who don’t know any Spanish or took it so long ago that they want to start over from the beginning.
Intermediate MMS is for those learners who can manage with some Spanish but really need to work on some essential verb conjugations expanding medical vocabulary and building conversational confidence.
Advanced MMS is ideal for the highly conversational student who needs to work on medical terminology, listening comprehension of native Spanish speakers and build confidence with advanced grammar topics like the subjunctive.

I cannot say enough great things about this course! I love the combination of video and live lessons along with opportunities to practice speaking the language in a warm, friendly environment. I was immediately able to implement things I was learning into patient care and increased the depth of my understanding for the way patients describe pain and other symptoms. Several of those patients even commented on my improving language skills from week to week!

I took Mastering Medical Spanish - beginning in the fall and then took the intermediate class this spring. It was a pretty big jump for me but I powered through and learned a lot. I enjoyed that you can do the weekly online lessons at your own pace but also get a face to face online lesson with other classmates. I found a great conversation partner through the class who has really helped me increase my confidence. I'm looking forward to going to Costa Rica for an immersion program this summer!

It's a great class with a lot of detailed information! That you can rewatch the lectures/instructions is incredibly helpful. Truly the key is to choose at least one conversation partner; it helps really solidify and master the information. Rory, Leslie, and Stephanie care that the students do well and master the program! An amazing experience.

These are the first Spanish lessons I have taken that utilize Medical Spanish as a frame of reference. I thought that this would provide motivation and challenge to advance my use of the language. I got this and more in the MMS course. The 10 weeks of lesson and practice sessions, the profiling of common patient presentations, seemed voluminous, but went quickly, and increased my confidence with spoken and written word. The presentation of the subjunctive as "el Mundo Nuevo" filled with "riqueza y peligro" was refreshingly lighthearted and a great brave step into complicated subject matter. I wish we'd had this course as residents or new doctors in Family Medicine, but I am thankful to have found it now. Thanks to Rory, Leslie, and Andrea for their inspiration and boundless enthusiasm.

I just completed the intermediate MMS course and it was well worth my time. I am Occupational Therapist in CA and have many Spanish speaking patients. I need to pass a fluency test in order to speak Spanish with patients and to bypass using a Video Interpreter service. I already had a good base, but was lacking the medical terminology and confidence to take the test. I feel ready to take the test now and plan to continue with the advanced course simply because I can.

I work in a family clinic and have seen my Spanish knowledge and ability to speak grow tremendously since working my way through MMS (Beginner-Advanced) and Intercambio. The CGI team is supportive and enthusiastic and always ready to help. The satisfaction of connecting with patients immediately with applicable Spanish is unparalleled. Because the CGI team is international, cultural nuances are included in the course and this adds a depth which helps when serving patients from different countries. I can't recommend CGI enough if you are looking for a way to learn or improve your Spanish!

You won't regret it. Enjoyable, engaging and effective. They make an effort to make sure the class members walk away with the Spanish they need for their own specific clinical needs. The intermediate level opened up my ability to confidently speak about anything in the past tense, express what I need in the future, and to ask for things and give commands as needed. I met some very enjoyable and sincere language learners in the course, too. I look forward to studying with them again when I'm ready to take my Spanish to the next level. LOTS of CE's is icing on the cake!

If anyone is looking for a sign to take this course, this is it! Every student who takes this class will understand why. Rory and Leslie are wonderful instructors who have structured the class very well. They cater to all learning styles - tactile (you can use flashcards and/or dice), auditory with videos and audio of vocab, visual with powerpoint notes, videos, and online flashcards and more! You have the opportunity to participate in class and practice with a language partner outside of class. Rory and Leslie don't only present what to study but HOW to study - poco o poco. They are responsive and engaging and really want to help you reach your medical spanish speaking/reading/comprehension goals. I'm forever grateful for their knowledge and resources. I will continue to take their classes because they have impacted me so much!

I thought this was a wonderful CME course. Let's face it...most CME courses are painful to sit through. While I won't pretend to be fluent (yet!) I know I can carry on a basic conversation, which has helped me to build a better rapport with my Spanish-speaking patients.

MMS has proved to be very useful for work in a clinic where most patients speak only Spanish and translators are in short supply. Having the resources to do 80% of the work myself lets me reserve the translators for complicated problems and for end of visit reviews to be sure that there are no misunderstandings. The direct interaction with clients makes for a much warmer and more clinically nuanced visit than doing all work through a third party. It is also much more fun.

Just wrapping up the winter/spring session of MMS '21 and it was worth every peso (and more). The structure is very organized and they offer multiple modalities of study to accommodate many different types of learners (audio/visual/writing/listening/games+). It is A LOT of information, but broken down into manageable parts that focuses on what is needed for essential, effective, and rapport building communication with patients. Rory and Leslie are excellent instructors, nice to zoom with a variety of medical professionals nation-wide, and 'class' is enjoyable. Highly recommend and I plan to continue my studies with Common Ground International. Also hope to travel with them some day.

This is such a great course that I have taken it twice! I find one can learn at all levels. The combination of learning methods from video instructions, practice exams and games, practicing with your conversational partner, participating in the class and many more opportunities to learn spanish in the context of one's health care related practice creates and exceptional method of developing proficiency in medical spanish. Rory and Leslie are gifted teachers that can make this experience non intimidating, relevant, accessible, and fun. They have definately mastered (teaching) medical spanish!

This class has been amazing and exactly what I needed. After years of trying to learn Spanish on my own, I felt as if I could communicate somewhat decently with my patients, but only on very familiar topics/diagnoses that I see very often and in which I can use the same phrases time and time again. I struggled greatly with comprehension and answering specific patient questions that veered from my "go to"phrases. This course has greatly helped with my comprehension and with breaking the rut regarding my spanish learning that I had fallen into. The weekly videos and lessons/notes were extremely helpful in learning more vocabulary, sentence structure, and grammar tips. The weekly live classes were vital in putting everything into practice and getting to speak the language in a stress-free environment. Andrea has been an excellent teacher and so helpful. This has been a great course and I highly recommend it to everyone!

This course is excellent. Andrea has done a great job of slowing down her presentations a bit to help us capture greater content. At the same time, she has kept it challenging so we grow in our capacity to speak and understand during each lesson. Awesome teacher! Rory's video presentations are clear and most helpful. The notes with excercises are a good fit to the work of both presenters. Highly recommend this course.

This is a great course. It has given me the opportunity to relearn/review/solidify some of the grammar rules that I haven't thought about in a concrete manner in a long time as well as learn some new tips and tricks. I would highly recommend it for someone looking to improve their overall grasp of the language.

If you have to speak spanish for work, you should take this class. My own self-study was crap compared to what I've learned here. The lessons are practical and specific to the healthcare setting. The instructor, lessons, exercises, and class sessions are excellent. No time is wasted. A recommendation: since patient communication is essential to patient care, you might ask your work if they'll give you comp time and/or pay for the course, even though there's no CME.

This course has been exactly what I was looking for. I'd spent several years piddling along with Duolingo...which did give me some basic concepts but this course has given me the skills I need to use as a family doctor. In addition to the knowledge of medical concepts in Spanish, the kind and supportive attitude of Rory and Leslie have helped me start to gain some confidence in using what I do know. I felt comfortable trying to speak Spanish with a patient today and while it was halting, it was a nice start and my patient was very appreciative of my efforts. I highly recommend this course. If you are on the fence about trying it...just do it...! Carpe diem...not Spanish but my personal motto.

If you are looking for a very detailed and attentive instructors, look no further then Mastering Medical Spanish. Every week you meet with your speaking partner and also meet as a group for the live session. Before attending the live session, you watch videos asynchronous about the weeks topics. Rory and Leslie are very knowledge about medical topics and have lots of resources for different specialties. I learned so much about how to appropriately say things to my patient population. I was really impressed how much my classmates and I improved over the 3 month course. I would highly recommend if you have a basic knowledge of Spanish this would be a really good course for you.

This course is exactly what I was hoping for!! The lecture videos, downloadable notes and practice materials all structured to medical themes is an great way to learn Spanish that you can apply at the bedside or in an office setting. Additionally, the course gives cultural insights that are invaluable to understanding and caring for your patients. Rory and Leslie are fun, attentive and encouraging teachers. What a great spanish class taught by two great teachers! I am a Family Nurse Practitioner and while I no longer work in a facility that requires me to use my spanish speaking skills, I wanted to continue and improve learning spanish. Mastering Medical Spanish allowed me to do this! The sentence structure, much of the vocabulary and grammar taught to us is used in every day conversation. I will continue to follow with them and their curriculum because I believe it will help me achieve my goal to speak spanish with more fluency.

Taking Mastering Medical Spanish has been one of the best choices I’ve made for my career this year. Not only have I learned so many medical and clinical terms, but Rory and Leslie guided us through the nuances of how to interact with all ages. My goal before starting the course was to actually open my mouth and start speaking Spanish at work. As the course progressed, that goal has been met and I’ve actually connected with my patients because they see I want to communicate respectfully with them. Every learning style is addressed to help Spanish ‘stick’ and the live sessions were such a help. Connecting with other professionals across the country and hearing how they apply Spanish was an added bonus. I highly recommend Common Ground International and especially MMS to anyone wanting to improve their clinical Spanish.

I can’t thank Rory and Leslie enough for helping me learn Spanish. Rory and Leslie are amazing teachers who are kind, motivating and encouraging throughout the process. Learning Spanish for the Medical professional has helped grow my confidence in speaking with my patients and more importantly being able to listen to them. I am so happy to have completed this course and am looking forward to continue learning with Rory and Leslie! I recommend this class to all my colleagues.

This course really helped me target the little nuances I need to work on to get to the next level. It was also very motivating to hear the stories of the others in the group and see them improve. I live in a county that was SIP during most of the course. It was so mentally uplifting to see and be able to interact with other virtual faces that weren't my clients or coworkers. Rory and Leslie not only know their stuff, but they create a fun engaging environment every class that promotes improvement.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to speak openly and, albeit, sometimes poorly, in spanish to a group of learners without concern for judgement and where everyone is there to push each other forward. This mentality is embodied in the care and effort Rory and Leslie pour into this program, and they are the reason this works so well!

This is an excellent class - definitely worth the time and money! I would recommend it to anyone looking to improve their Spanish for medical purposes. It is so nice to have a class centered specifically on clinical aspects. It is so helpful to learn the one-liners that will get you through exams with patients instead of one-liners to get you through a restaurant visit. I also cannot say enough wonderful things about Rory and Leslie. They are knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and encouraging.

Mastering Medical Spanish online course was very helpful and because it is all online, it is easy to work into a busy schedule. The lessons have a great amount of vocabulary that is focused on medical topics with just enough grammar to help you ask your H and P questions when you encounter Spanish speaking patients. Rory and Leslie and very helpful and easy to work with. I would definitely recommend this class.

Mastering Medical Spanish (MMS) is what I have been searching for for years. It structures your learning into themed lesson plans with appropriate vocabulary & grammar to address specific aspects of your conversations with patients. The course begins with you identifying your 5 most common patient types (specific diseases, procedures, etc.) and focusing on what you need to get through a full encounter in Spanish. With Intercambio up and running, you can partner with a native Spanish speaker to work on pronunciation and listening skills. Rory & Leslie are fun and engaging teachers, and the breakout sessions provide a great opportunity to put what you've been working on into practice. To get the most out of this course, be prepared to put some time into it - depending on your starting level of Spanish, about 3-6 hours a weeks. I strongly recommend this course.

If you are looking for a Spanish glass with a teacher that is extremely available and invested in your learning this program is for you. I have taken 4 classes with common ground International and went to Ecuador with a group last fall. The last class I took was the Mastering Medical Spanish online via Zoom. This class gives you the flexibility to study at your own pace and have the opportunity for real one-on-one conversation with people from around the world as well as weekly group classes. Every week there is a new focus on structure/conjugation/etc. with new medical vocab words. I could take the things I was learning directly to work and practice with my patients. I also had the opportunity to focus my learning on my specialty. Highly recommend this class and any other classes Common Ground International International provides.

I have been taking many courses and done 3 immersion programs with Common Ground International and I am never disappointed. Rory and Leslie are both exceptional teachers and responsive to feedback and will make changes as they get input to meet students' needs. My Spanish speaking and comprehension skills have improved dramatically over the years that I have worked with Common Ground and Rory and Leslie get credit for helping me achieve that. The Mastering Medical Spanish online course could not have come at a more perfect time with everything in this world having to go remote due to the corona virus. Rory did a masterful job of presenting over Zoom and making interactive learning materials available to enhance our learning. The conversation portion has also been very helpful with native Spanish speakers from Latin American countries partnering with English speaking students.

I could not recommend this course enough. It is filled with tons of practical knowledge and you can start practicing Spanish with your patients from the first lesson. Leslie and Rory provide excellent support and have such a positive energy. I am so glad I took this course but I still have a lot of work ahead as learning a new language is not something that you can master in 3 months. Now, I understand my patients and can catch if the interpreter in my clinic is not saying what I said. Highly recommend.

I've been on & off with my Medical Spanish studies for several years. I have to complete 20 CE hours every 2 years and end up with one or two hours of Spanish for nurses. I occasionally volunteer in a clinic with many Spanish speakers and I decided I could do better. When I started searching for something online, I came across the Video Viernes. I found that I benefited from the techniques. I signed up for the MMS course to receive a very structured course that involved a routine of lessons and conversation. I'm continuing with the intercambio to further my conversation skills. Thanks Common Ground International.

I highly recommend this course. There are videos with downloadable powerpoint notes and an app called Quizlet which qizzes you on the material. We had an hour live session with Rory weekly where we reviewed the week's material and practiced speaking with each other in chat rooms with Rory's guidance. The content is comprehensive and well-presented. Rory created a very supportive environment. By the end of the course I felt a lot better about speaking spanish. The course also provides a section where you can post your availability and find someone to practice spanish with during the week. I was lucky to connect with an M.D. in Washington state and we still practice.

Hi Wendy! Sorry for the late reply, you can start the course on your own anytime and then join the live lessons that start again in the fall. Please feel free to email us ([email protected]) so we can answer any further questions you might have 🙂

    1. Hi Lindsay, MMS is accredited for CE through the California State Board of Nursing and for CME through the American Academy of Family Physicians. Please check to see if you can claim those credits as an OT.

  2. Hi–I live in the eastern time zone and work from 530am-2 pm. The practice times will not work for me, but this seems very important. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    1. Hey Kathy, That’s definitely a tough schedule. There are a handful of people who can’t make the practice times. And what they’re doing is watching the replays of the live practice and meeting with their conversational partners a couple of times a week to get the same practice. Let me know if you think that works for you and we can work something out. Sorry for seeing your comment so late.
